Reconnecting young people to their Elders, Culture and traditional lands

Traditional Cultural Practices (TCP) is an Elders led Not for Profit organisation dedicated to ensuring that traditional knowledge and Cultural practices from the World’s oldest living Culture remains strong and through this continues to support  positive physical and emotional health outcomes for First Nations People and our Communities across Australia.

TCP came about as a result of producing the ‘Elders Report into Preventing Indigenous Self Harm and Youth Suicide’. During the making of the Report, two key questions were asked to Elders and Community leaders from Cape York to the Kimberley – ‘Why is suicide and self harm happening? ‘And, ‘What can be done to end this?’

In response – Reconnecting young people to their Elders, Culture and traditional lands was the unanimous answer. Our work is based on this reconnection.

Our Work

Knowing Culture

Through evidence based outcomes TCP supports  Communities to be on their traditional lands to participate in Elder designed and led Cultural mentoring programs and camps. This work empowers, heals and strengthens First Nations youth and through this the Communities they belong to.

Caring for Country

As the Traditional Custodians of Australia we  have respect, responsibility and the right knowledge to care for our lands and waters, it is an integral part of who we are. Healthy land means healthy people.  Engaging in on country healing programs for our Communities is an important partnership between land and people that cannot be replicated elsewhere.

Social Responsibility

Building awareness directed to the wider Community around positive health outcomes for First Nations People is critical in supporting the work we do and in changing policy around this. The short films on our “Projects” page demonstrates just some of the work TCP produce and continue to be responsible for.
